The current five-time World Chess Champion, four-time World Rapid Chess Champion, and six-time World Blitz Chess Champion is Norwegian chess grandmaster Sven Magnus En Carlsen, who was born on 30 November 1990.
Since July 1, 2011, Carlsen has been ranked first in the FIDE global chess rankings, second only to Garry Kasparov in terms of the amount of time he has stayed at that position.

Why is Magnus Carlsen considered as one of the best Chess players?
A young prodigy in the game, Carlsen won the Corus Chess Tournament’s C group just after turning 13 and was given the title of grandmaster a few months later.
He won the Norwegian Chess Championship at the age of 15, and at the age of 17, he tied for first place in the elite group at Corus. He was the youngest person to achieve it at age 18 and attained a rating of 2800.
The youngest player ever to accomplish so, he attained No. 1 in the FIDE world rankings in 2010 at the age of 19.
In 2013, Carlsen defeated Viswanathan Anand to win the title of World Chess Champion.

What are the honors received by Magnus Carlsen?
From 2009 until 2013, Carlsen was the chess Oscars victor. The Chess Oscar, sponsored by the Russian chess magazine 64, was given to the year’s top player based on a survey of eminent chess critics, authors, and journalists from across the world. However, once 64 discontinued publishing in 2013, the award was no longer given.
Carlsen received two “Name of the Year” (rets navn) awards from the Norwegian tabloid Verdens Gang (VG), in 2009 and 2013. He received the 2009 “Sportsman of the Year” honour from VG.
In 2009 and 2010, Carlsen also took home the Folkets Idrettspris, a readers’ choice prize from the Norwegian daily Dagbladet.
Awarded annually in Norway to “a person or organisation that has attained distinction in society,” the Peer Gynt Prize went to him in 2011.
Carlsen was included among the top 100 important persons in the world by Time magazine in 2013.
